Mexico entry rules for Nigerians

Whether you need a visa for Mexico, what it is called, where to apply, roughly what it costs, the documents to carry, health rules, and the transit warnings on common routings.

This page covers the general rules. Your ticket may add more. Check your exact route and connections.

Do Nigerians need a visa for Mexico?

Yes. You must hold a Visa Without Permission for Remunerated Activities (tourism and business, stays up to 180 days) before you fly. Without it you are refused at check-in in Lagos or Abuja, not at the border.

What it is called
Visa Without Permission for Remunerated Activities (tourism and business, stays up to 180 days)

You do not need a Mexican visa at all if you hold a valid multiple-entry visa from the USA, Canada, Japan, the UK or a Schengen country, or permanent residence in one of those or in a Pacific Alliance country. Present it at the Mexican port of entry.

Where do you apply for a Mexico visa in Nigeria?

Embassy of Mexico, Abuja. In person only — documents cannot be sent by courier or through a third party. Biometrics and an interview are taken on the day.

How does the Mexico visa appointment work?

Book at citas.sre.gob.mx on a desktop or laptop; the site does not work well on phones. New slots are released on the last working day of each month, around 5pm Nigeria time. If it says "no office found", that month is fully booked. Create your account in advance.

How much does a Mexico visa cost, and how long does it take?

The Embassy does not state a fee for this visa category. Other categories on the same page are listed at the Naira equivalent of USD 54, non-refundable. Confirm the current amount with the Embassy when you book.

The Embassy does not publish a processing time. In practice the wait is getting an appointment slot, not the decision.

How much passport validity do you need for Mexico?

At least 6 months left on the day you arrive. The airline checks this at the desk and will refuse you if it is short.

Do Nigerians need a transit visa for Mexico?

No transit rule recorded for connecting through Mexico. That is not the same as being cleared — confirm with your airline if your ticket stops there.

Which connections cause problems on the way to Mexico?

  • Connecting in ESP

Routings to Mexico that make a technical stop in Spain still count as Schengen transit. Passengers holding a valid US, UK, Canadian or Schengen visa can transit Barcelona to Mexico. Nigerian passengers holding none of those will not be accepted for travel on a flight transiting a Schengen state.

When it applies: A technical stop in Spain, even without leaving the aircraft

If ignored: Refused at check-in in Lagos or Abuja.

    Source: embamex.sre.gob.mx · checked 2026-09-11

  • Connecting in BRA

Brazil does not require a transit visa if you stay in the international transit zone and your whole journey is on a single PNR. Separate tickets mean you must clear immigration, which requires a visa.

When it applies: Connecting through Brazil on separate tickets rather than one booking

If ignored: Refused at transit and returned.
